The idea for painting "Fall Gather" came to me as I looked through photos that were taken last fall (2006) during some of the gathers that took place on the ranch east of Miles City, Montana. We were gathering the cattle so that the calves could be weaned. I thought this painting would give me a chance to paint a scene that depicted the wide open spaces of eastern Montana, and what it looks and feels like to be a cowboy and work in such a place. It was a cool morning and with a brisk breeze blowing, we all still had our heavy jackets on. In this scene, the plans for gathering the pasture are being made. The Powder River flows passed the ranch in between these riders and the hills on the far horizon.

The idea for painting "A Day Off" originated from a scene I recalled of some horses standing in a creek one early summer's day after we had been branding. It was a hot day and the nose flies were bothering the horses in the pasture. After we had finished branding our bunch for the day, I spotted these horses standing as content as could be in a creek that ran by us. They had finally found a place away from the flies and the water, no doubt, felt good to stand in. The late afternoon sun spread some spectacular shadows across the water and the reflection of the horses was great. I knew that I had to paint the scene someday!

I spend quite a bit of time hiking in the Bozeman area in the summers. One of my favorite areas is the Lee-Metcalf Wilderness area. The Spanish Peaks are spectacular mountains. I thought it would be neat to do a self-portrait with those mountains in the background. Included in the painting is me, my horse "Scratch", and a friend's dog "Tuff".
